Training your dog with a few key tips

August 19, 2013 By

Dogs can be like family and you want to find positive ways to train them. This article is full of helpful advice and techniques that are tailored for you to use as you train your dog. Knowledge is power and this article should pump you up!

Make sure to let your pet know a crate is their home initially. Leave the crate door open and place food inside of it when it’s time to eat. This way that start to like their crate even more.

Be sure to keep your dog active and engaged a great deal of the time. Dogs can get bored very easily. Bored dogs are harder to train. When your dog gets regular exercise, he will be much happier and will pay attention more easily. Go on runs or long walks together.

Dogs generally focus on one thing while ignoring everything around them, unless something interrupts that intense focus. If you keep up with his training, your dog will look to you more often for direction rather than looking to the environment.

Do not reinforce any negative behaviors accidentally. In basic terms, this means refusing to reward your dog, via attention or treats, for doing any action that you are trying to get them to stop doing. If they jump on you, don’t pet them, for example.

You should always call your dog in the same way. Start commands by using his name. Using their name will help to personalize your command. Dogs are more likely to respond immediately whenever their name is called because they are aware that you want their attention.

Positive reinforcement is the best way to train a dog. Use positive language to reward the dog, as well as petting and small treats on occasion. Do not ever scream at or strike your dog. These tactics backfire and just make your dog believe you are incompetent. Firmness, positivity and consistency are the keys to solid dog training.

Pay strict attention to your body language and tone of voice anytime you are training a pet. Dogs are great at understanding how their trainer feels. Try using a stern tone to really convey your message to your dog.

Training Sessions

Wearing out a puppy with too much training and information, will be extremely counterproductive. Puppies can’t pay attention for too long and are not very good at focusing on something for long periods of time, so limit the duration of training sessions. If training sessions are too long, the puppy won’t remember the specifics of the training session, just that is was grueling and exhausting. This will make it harder to train him next time.

When house training your new puppy, accidents are likely to happen from time to time. Clean accidents up immediately to assist in your training efforts. The smell from a pet’s feces or urine can stay in the carpet. The puppy may return to that spot if it isn’t cleaned quickly. There are a number of products available at pet stores that get rid of these odors.

Just by reading this article, you have taken the initial step in training your dog and becoming a responsible dog owner. If you are willing to experiment with the advice from this article, soon you will be more capable of becoming an effective trainer and master for your pet. Simple advice could really be helpful.

Fido giving you trouble? These tips can help!

August 19, 2013 By

When you decide it’s time to train your dog, it’s very common to be a bit lost. Good dog-training skills come naturally to very few people. In order to train your pet properly, preparing yourself with some good advice is an excellent idea. This article contains good guidelines for several different aspects of dog training.

Correct your dog verbally with short, sharp statements. There’s no point in ranting at your dog. Just say no, then let them know what behavior you want to see. Use a tone which is obviously one of consternation.

A main focus of training is timing your sessions appropriately. Start out with a small training session and up the time every day. When the animal appears to lose interest, you will know which duration produces the best results per session.

Make sure the diet you are feeding your dog is healthy and nutritious. Your dog will not benefit from a poor diet. It can make your dog behave badly and is not good for their health. Something as easy as proper nutrition can make a dog more obedient.

Learning how to show authority is the foundation of all dog training. He needs to know that you are the authority before he will let you train him. On walks with your dog, you should lead him and not the other way around.

Think of a word you can use as a command during training. “yes” is a great bridge word between the dogs positive accomplishment and the reward they receive.

Teaching a dog how to roll over isn’t too hard with a few treats in your hand. Start by getting the dog to lay down. Afterward, bring the treat above the dogs head and follow over to their other side. The dog ought to follow his treat with the nose, prompting him to flop his entire body over. As he is rolling over say, “roll over” and praise them immediately when they do. Don’t get frustrated if it takes a few tries, once he learns this trick he’ll be the star of the dog park!

Be prepared to reward the dog as soon as it completes a positive behavior. It is important for your pet to understand that you have certain expectations, what those expectations are, and that he will be rewarded for complying. This can establish right from wrong quickly and efficiently.

Take caution when near an unfamiliar dog and offer them a chance to sniff your hands. This allows the dog to get used to your scent and makes him much more likely to trust you. After your dog gets your scent, it will no longer fear you and will follow commands better.

Limit the duration of training sessions. If you try to focus for a long period of time on one command, your dog will show signs of boredom and begin to get antsy. Aim for less than 10 minutes per session.

Primary Reinforcement

Primary reinforcement is a proven principle that is useful in training dogs. Primary reinforcement involves utilizing something that the dog loves to reward good behavior. Primary reinforcements include using food as treats and rubbing your dog’s belly. Doing this will show your dog alternatives for obtaining what he wants appropriately.

Now that you have been provided with this useful information, you are on your way to having a well behaved dog. Once you get the information you need, training your dog will be a piece of cake!

Dog training tips that anyone can use

August 19, 2013 By

It has been widely accepted that a well trained dog leads to a better relationship between owner and pet. If your dog knows how to socialize and behave properly, spending time with him will always be pleasant and enjoyable. For the sake of a good relationship between your canine and you, keep reading.

Your dog must respect you in order for training to work. He needs to know that you are the authority before he will let you train him. Don’t let your dog control the direction or pace of your walks.

You should keep doggy treats handy for rewarding your dog. The treat helps your dog to know that you think he has done well. This is the proper way to make sure the dog knows the difference between good behavior and bad.

Having a regular feeding schedule makes house training much easier by putting their elimination needs on a schedule as well. Once you’ve established a schedule, it will be easier to predict when your dog needs to go to the bathroom. Conversely, this also teaches your dog that he may need to wait to go to the bathroom.

Begin your dog training session with something that your dog will be able to learn easily. This ensures that success comes quickly and your dog learns to love training sessions. This will give you much better results while training.

Be careful not to spend too much time at once training your dog. Devoting strict amounts of time to any particular aspect of training will have your dog feeling distracted and bored. Aim for less than 10 minutes per session.

If your dog jumps up, quickly bring your knee up to encounter his chest and say OFF! Although it may be uncomfortable, it does not hurt them when done lightly. Since it is so uncomfortable, they’ll avoid jumping on people.

Primary Reinforcement

Use primary reinforcement to train your dog. With primary reinforcement, you use something that your dog loves when it needs to be rewarded for positive behavior. Rewards can be rubbing a dog’s belly or giving it a treat. When he likes the outcome, he’ll be more likely to follow your commands.

You cannot rush through the training process. Puppies have short attention spans and they cannot focus too much, so have shorter sessions and try to be positive during them every time. If you try to rush and throw in too much information, your puppy will not remember the lesson and you’ll have a harder time training him.

It is vital to keep some slack in the leash when you are trying to train a dog. Dogs want to explore new territories while going out for a walk. This eagerness can cause them to pull against the leash if it’s held too tightly. The smart owner will deter this behavior by having his pet walk without tension on the leash.

A lot of people think that training their pet is easy and less stressful. They also think that it is not as time-consuming as they thought. Even something that may appear like a minor adjustment can actually produce significant improvements in the animal’s attitude and habits.

Learn how to train your dog properly by following these tips

August 18, 2013 By

A well-trained dog is one which you can enjoy more. If your dog knows how to socialize and behave properly, spending time with him will always be pleasant and enjoyable. Keep reading in order to learn how to create a great partnership with your pet.

Make sure you remain controlled when rewarding your dog. Once your dog follows your command, reward his behavior. If you are overly excited, the dog will become that way too. You should stay calm and then give the reward.

Give your puppy some toys to chew on so they do not hurt while teething, keep other things they might want to chew on out of their reach! Replace the item immediately with one of the dog’s own chew toys. If your puppy needs to chew because he is teething, try a frozen washcloth.

Do not tie up several dogs in close proximity to each other. One dog’s chain might become entangled with the other, which could lead to serious injuries. If a big dog is tangled up with a little one, they may get so wrapped up that air passages are blocked off, and one could potentially die.

A new dog requires teaching proper obedience training right from the beginning. It is easier to instill good habits than it is to deal with bad ones. Never give a dog food scraps from the table so that it does not get into the bad habit of begging for them.

Breeds Require

As part of good training, you should learn if your dog’s breed requires special grooming. Some dog breeds require little to no grooming, while other breeds require meticulous grooming almost every week. Proper grooming results in a cleaner and happier pet, and it cuts down on the occurrence of diseases.

The cause of your dog’s destructive chewing habits might just be separation anxiety. You can also keep your dog from causing damage while you’re away by humanely enclosing him in an appropriately sized dog crate or some other small space of his own with a chew toy to keep him occupied.

Punishment is an ineffective tool for training your dog. If he misbehaves, correct him, but most importantly, you should try to prevent that behavior from happening to begin with. Build a positive relationship with your dog during the training process.

Give your dog a treat to get him to respond as you desire. Slowly reduce the number of treats as time progresses and watch as they continue to follow instructions.

When it comes to barking, be aware of the environment or activities when your dog barks excessively. If you are aware of what causes your dog to bark, you can more easily address the issues. For example, invite a friend over to assist you in training your dog if he always barks when that particular friend is around.

If you catch your puppy chewing on something, firmly say no, then remove the item from him. This will help your puppy understand what is acceptable and what is off limits.

Many times people expect that training their puppy will be much more difficult and stressful that it actually is. Simple changes in our own behavior, as well as simple techniques that we implement, can result in big improvements in our dog’s behavior.
