Follow these tips for successful dog training.

August 22, 2013 By

Training your dog is showing that you are a responsible dog owner. Training your dog to be a well mannered canine citizen will not only improve your relationship with them, it will keep them safe and happy. These tips will help you get started or give you a better idea of what training a dog is like.

It takes a while for a dog to get comfortable in a crate. Don’t take it too fast; introduce the dog at his own pace. Once your puppy feels comfortable in the open crate, close the door and offer the dog a treat. Leave them in for short periods of time, as little as 10 seconds. Work up from there. If the dog becomes upset, then you need to take a step back and slow down the training.

Look out for your dog’s nutrition the same way you would look after your own. Feeding your dog bad food is very bad for several different reasons. Not only does it affect the dog’s health, but it can have an impact on its behavior. A proper diet can affect how well they react to training.

Among the first commands that you should teach your puppy is the command “leave it,” which tells the puppy to drop whatever he has in his mouth and back away from it. This command teaches them to cease chewing on furniture or items around the house and it keeps them safe from filthy or hazardous items outside.

When a dog jumps up on you, grab its paws with your hand and lightly squeeze to let them know that it is unacceptable behavior. While this will not seriously hurt the animal, it is certainly unpleasant and therefore makes a powerful statement. After a while, they’ll stop jumping due to this uncomfortable feeling.

Use short training sessions. Your dog’s memory and attention span is short, keep the training this way. If you want to engage in additional training, allow the dog to have a break in order to get some exercise.

During puppy toilet training, it’s important to avoid accidents. Learn the signs that your dog needs to use the restroom. He could be snuffing, pacing or even whining. Don’t put it off when your dog is doing these things. Get outside right away to the dog’s favorite spot. Whenever your dog uses the restroom outside, reward him or her with lots of praise. In time, he will ask you to take him out.

Giving praise to your dog for a job well done is important. Acting super excited can help your dog to understand that you are happy with their behavior. Having these same reactions to bad behavior will teach your dog that whatever they are doing is okay.

With any luck, this advice will increase the pleasure your dog brings to you and your loved ones. By training your dog properly, you will prevent stress and frustration in both your lives. Regardless of if you decide to train your dog on your own or use a professional, it is key that you do train your dog to ensure a happy union with your dog.
