To have a happy life with your dog, you need to make sure that it is properly trained. You both understand what is expected out of each other. You won’t have to worry much about doing public outings or letting him stay home alone after he is trained. It might take some effort, but teaching your dog tricks and manners is an important investment in everyone’s happiness.
Spoken directions should be made using a simple, concise and forceful tone. Yelling and screaming at your dog is counterproductive. Just tell them no, and point them in the desired direction. When speaking to your dog, use a voice that commands respect.
Use consistency when you are crate training your young puppy. When letting your dog out of the crate, be sure to immediately allow your dog to relieve himself. Eventually, the puppy will learn to wait to pee until given the opportunity.
The first thing to do when training a dog is to establish that you are in control. You have to show your dog that you are in control or he will not obey or respect you. Never allow your dog pull on the leash while you are on a walk.
Pick a consistent phrase to use with your puppy while house training. Tell the dog a phrase, like “go potty!”, whenever you go outside to help your dog keep the goal of going outside in mind.
Use an even tone when commanding your dogs. The dog will know you’re telling them what to do that way. Additionally, it distances discipline commands from normal commands.
Don’t spend too long on a single dog training session. Dog attention spans only go so far, so make sure not to go on too long. The first few sessions especially should be kept under 10 minutes.
Dogs need an hour or more of exercise each day, aside from their potty breaks. When your dog gets enough exercise, training sessions are usually more effective and produce faster results. Your dog will be happier and more responsive when he gets the exercise he needs.
Maintain short training sessions. Dogs don’t have long attention spans so keeping training short and concise keeps it from becoming something that they dread. If you want to have a full day of training, then ensure you provide your dog with plenty of breaks so that they can relax for a little while before they continue their training regimen.
Effective dog training requires a level firmness. However, this doesn’t mean constantly yelling at your dog. Instead, find some balance between being firm and being loving. This will help you build a great relationship with your pup.
Changing your vocal tone depending on what you want to communicate will help train your dog. Use a clearly defined tone for different commands, encouragement or directives. This makes it easier for the dog to link your expectations with different behaviors. Commands must be sharp and firm, corrections should be loud and praise should be given in a natural tone.
Remember how many treats you reward your dog with during the course of the day to avoid fattening him up. Many people do not factor in treats when they are tabulating a pet’s diet, but they do add up, particularly while you are training.
Most of all, training a dog lays out the dog/owner relationship rules. You enjoy each other much more once those guidelines are outlined. Remember to keep reinforcing what your dog has learned. Provide refresher courses when needed and continue to correct bad behavior. When your dog has learned everything that is basic, you can try more advanced things.
