Dog training basics for any family

September 8, 2013 By

It can be quite overwhelming to train a dog. However, dog training is important to ensure that your property, your home, your pet and other people are safe. Positive training is key in training a dog. And that means also being patient and consistent in your training. Daily training will be more effective in short bursts. Any longer and they become bored.

The more active your dog is, the healthier it will be. Dogs become bored very easily. When a dog’s mind begins to wander, the training process loses its effectiveness. Dogs are more inclined to obey when they are regularly taken out for exercise and happily accepted as a member of your family. Go for long walks and runs with your dog.

Multiple repetitions will be necessary for a dog to learn new commands. It can take as many as 50 repetitions of one command before your dog learns it. Be patient and say the same command in the same way each time. Your dog will learn eventually.

When you buy a crate, ensure it is the correct size. As your dog gets older, he will probably grow larger. Be sure to select a crate that allows your dog to have ample room as it grows. Don’t restrict the size so much so that the dog cannot lie or turn easily.

As you start training your dog, establish verbal cues that let your dog understand when they have performed something correctly. It’s faster to tell your dog “yes” than it is to find and give it a treat.

Shock Collars

Avoid training devices which are high end such as shock collars. In addition to being very expensive, they usually do not work as well as the more traditional training techniques. Also, using devices such as shock collars can restrain your dog while discouraging good behavior. Trying things akin to this will only cause harm to your relationship with your dog.

Give your dog more freedom as he or she gets further along in the training program. It is important that you reach a balance between freedom and obedience in order to establish a satisfying relationship. Just be cautious not to give too much freedom at once, as this may have a counter effect on your dog training.

Choose an easily teachable action to train your dog with in the beginning. Smaller, more easily learned behaviors are more likely to produce timely successes and a solid foundation for future training efforts. You will see more results as you are training this way.

If your dog jumps up, quickly bring your knee up to encounter his chest and say OFF! You will not be hurting them if you squeeze them softly, they just do not like it. After a while, they’ll stop jumping due to this uncomfortable feeling.

Use the same hand signal or voice command to get your dog’s attention. Start commands with their name all the time. Using their name will help to personalize your command. Usually, dogs quickly respond when you can their name and are aware you want to grab their attention.

These ideas will keep your dog on the up and up. The end result is a happier and more respectful relationship with your dog. When following the training techniques mentioned here, your training will go smoother as long as you are patient and consistent.

At Pawsitive Solutions, we specialise in helping you get the best possible relationship with your dog.
