Train our dog the right way before he trains you the wrong way

September 2, 2013 By

Training your dog is essential to its happiness. A well mannered dog shows what both of you know and expect from the other. You will be less stressed knowing that he will behave himself when he is home alone or around other people. Training your dog may involve some hardship, but the end result will be a well-mannered, happy dog.

Make sure your dog stays calm as you enter a space that he is in. It is okay to have play time, but when you enter a room your dog should be calm. Don’t acknowledge your dog until you decide. This will establish a controlled atmosphere.

A healthy diet is essential for your dog. A bad diet is unhealthy for dogs for many reasons. Not only is this bad for their health, but it can influence their behavior towards you and their environment. Improving your dog’s diet can make training him easier.

Pick the proper size crate for your dog if you want to be able to effectively use the crate to train it. Puppies will grow up quite quickly. Be sure to select a crate that allows your dog to have ample room as it grows. There should be enough space to move around without feeling cramped.

Always treat a dog after completing tasks. Your dog should realize why you are happy with him. This is a good way to make your dog know the difference between a good and bad thing.

Dogs need routine, so feed your dog at the same time every day. This also helps with training. This can help you avoid accidents on the carpet by becoming aware of when the dog needs to go. This helps your puppy learn to “hold it” for a bit, until he knows it’s time to go out and will help save you money on carpet cleaning.

You should train your dog to walk properly on his leash. This will make your walks together a pleasure and not a source of frustration.

Primary Reinforcement

When training a doggy, use primary reinforcement. Primary reinforcement is a positive reinforcement training strategy that relies heavily on things your dog already enjoys. Use things such as treats or petting your dog to reinforce good behavior. This teaches your dog something that they desire.

Try to get your dog’s attention when you are training him or her. Begin commands by using his name. Once you call his name and have his attention, begin getting him to do what you would like. Dogs quickly recognize their name which allows you to get their attention.

To limit your dog’s barking, see if you can acclimate them to whatever triggers their barking. Whether your dog barks in response to other dogs, people, certain sounds or something else, it is important to habituate him to this circumstance. Your dog will understand that there is no need to bark in these situations.

Be certain to maintain consistency in training. If multiple family members are involved in a pet’s training, make sure everyone is using the same commands and a similar system of discipline and rewards. When everyone has the same command in use, the dog will pick it up quickly.

Through dog training sessions, both you and your dog will learn about building rules for your relationship. In the same way that these rules are helpful to human relationships, you and your dog will be able to enjoy the time you spend together more after there’s an understanding about how to follow the rules. Do not forget to remind your dog of what he has learned. Provide refresher courses when needed and continue to correct bad behavior. Once you finally get this core foundation of training built with the dog, the possibilities become limitless and you can expand into new and complex areas.

At Pawsitive Solutions, we specialise in helping you get the best possible relationship with your dog.

A few tricks to help you train your dog

August 30, 2013 By

Your happiness, as well as your dog’s, is based on its training. A dog training routine makes it easier for you and your dog to understand each other’s expectations. If your dog has been trained effectively, you will be less reluctant to leave him at home alone, allow him to interact with visitors or spend time together in public places like dog parks. It might not have been an easy road, but you will soon know that the time you spent on training your dog will have been worth it.

When doing crate training, train your dog incrementally rather than trying to do it all at once. If they are uncomfortable with the door closed then try to feed them snacks to reassure them that they are okay. Start off only putting them inside for 10 seconds, and when they seem okay with that, slowly increase the time they are inside. If the puppy gets too upset then you increased the time too much, too fast.

Consistency is very important when you are crate training your puppy. When letting your dog out of the crate, be sure to immediately allow your dog to relieve himself. Eventually, the puppy will learn to wait to pee until given the opportunity.

Multiple repetitions will be necessary for a dog to learn new commands. You might have to repeat the same exercise up to fifty times before your dog remembers it. Continue trying the same command and be patient, your dog will get it.

Choose one phrase to use every time you want your dog to do his business. Each time you let your dog out to relieve himself, use a phrase such as “go potty” so that he associates going outside with going to the bathroom.

Always have a treat for rewarding your dog. You want to teach your pooch that good behavior is beneficial. This is a good way to make your dog know the difference between a good and bad thing.

Primary Reinforcement

Primary reinforcement should be used when dog training. Primary reinforcement makes use of something that is already inherent for a dog to love getting as a reward when they behave. Primary reinforcement could be treats or giving your dog a belly rub. This way, your dog learns the right way to get what he wants.

Do not quit when you are training your dog. You must supply constant reinforcement for your dog; if you fail to do this, the dog may forget what you taught it. Training for your dog never ends, think about it in the same manner as sheltering and feeding your dog.

When taking your dog on a trip, be sure to have collar and leash, food and water, your dog’s bed and plenty of plastic bags to clean up after your dog. In order to have a pleasant trip, food and water bowls, bathroom bags and paper towels are necessities. Take only a small amount of food and purchase more when you arrive at your destination.

Training your dog is essentially establishing relationship rules, and, like with people, enjoyment with each other will be so much more since the groundwork has been established. You must continue to reinforce what you are teaching your dog. Make your dog stay sharp on what he has learned, and pay attention to stop relapses in your dog’s behavior. When the time comes that you have trained your dog in the basics, the things you and he can achieve have no limit.

At Pawsitive Solutions, we specialise in helping you get the best possible relationship with your dog.

How anyone can become a great dog trainer

August 22, 2013 By

There are numerous reasons to train your dog. It may just have been those puppy dog eyes. Regardless of what you liked about your dog, you will want it to behave well. In order to accomplish this, you must train your dog. This article has tips to get that training!

Stay consistent when it comes to feeding your dog. A predictable feeding schedule and removing the food promptly will teach them to eat their food quickly. Soon, your pet will finish the meal before you’re ready to remove its dish.

Be careful of disrupting your training time with rewards. If your dog is responding to your commands and is not overly excited, give him a treat. Although you are certainly excited about your dog’s accomplishment, showcasing lots of excitement on your end can cause your dog to become too excited, which causes you to lose control. Be calm and be sure to reward appropriately.

Don’t expect your dog to learn a command the first time you say it. It isn’t unusual to have to repeat a trick dozens of times before the dog understands. Being patient while trying the same task or command will allow your dog to understand it.

As you begin training your dog, create a verbal cue that allows your pet to understand the exact moment that they correctly complete your command. A positive word will give your dog time to obey.

Dog Training

As your dog becomes better when it comes to dog training, you can start giving it more freedom. The balance between freedom and obedience can give dogs a great life. Just be careful not to overdo it on the freedom initially as it can set your dog training efforts back.

Primary reinforcement is good to use when training your dog. With primary reinforcement, you use something that your dog loves when it needs to be rewarded for positive behavior. Examples of theses types of rewards are treats and belly rubs. This teaches your dog something that they desire.

A new puppy needs to be socialized to many different environments. Your dog must learn how to behave in the company of other dogs as well as humans. Your dog will be better able to handle new situations.

You should do some research on the grooming of the dog breed you chose. A lot of dogs won’t need much grooming, while others may need frequent groomings. Proper grooming results in a cleaner and happier pet, and it cuts down on the occurrence of diseases.

You should keep all of the training session pretty short. The average dog will pay attention for about fifteen minutes and will not learn anything once it has lost interest in the exercise. After each time you do some training, spend time horsing around with your dog, and let him know what a good boy he is.

Are you ready for the hard work? Hopefully, the tips in this article will help you on your way. A pet that behaves is what everyone wants. That said, this is not a quick process to complete. But it will be well-worthwhile when your dog follows your commands and becomes the ideal companion! Always be on the lookout for opportunities to put these great tips into action.

Fido giving you trouble? These tips can help!

August 19, 2013 By

When you decide it’s time to train your dog, it’s very common to be a bit lost. Good dog-training skills come naturally to very few people. In order to train your pet properly, preparing yourself with some good advice is an excellent idea. This article contains good guidelines for several different aspects of dog training.

Correct your dog verbally with short, sharp statements. There’s no point in ranting at your dog. Just say no, then let them know what behavior you want to see. Use a tone which is obviously one of consternation.

A main focus of training is timing your sessions appropriately. Start out with a small training session and up the time every day. When the animal appears to lose interest, you will know which duration produces the best results per session.

Make sure the diet you are feeding your dog is healthy and nutritious. Your dog will not benefit from a poor diet. It can make your dog behave badly and is not good for their health. Something as easy as proper nutrition can make a dog more obedient.

Learning how to show authority is the foundation of all dog training. He needs to know that you are the authority before he will let you train him. On walks with your dog, you should lead him and not the other way around.

Think of a word you can use as a command during training. “yes” is a great bridge word between the dogs positive accomplishment and the reward they receive.

Teaching a dog how to roll over isn’t too hard with a few treats in your hand. Start by getting the dog to lay down. Afterward, bring the treat above the dogs head and follow over to their other side. The dog ought to follow his treat with the nose, prompting him to flop his entire body over. As he is rolling over say, “roll over” and praise them immediately when they do. Don’t get frustrated if it takes a few tries, once he learns this trick he’ll be the star of the dog park!

Be prepared to reward the dog as soon as it completes a positive behavior. It is important for your pet to understand that you have certain expectations, what those expectations are, and that he will be rewarded for complying. This can establish right from wrong quickly and efficiently.

Take caution when near an unfamiliar dog and offer them a chance to sniff your hands. This allows the dog to get used to your scent and makes him much more likely to trust you. After your dog gets your scent, it will no longer fear you and will follow commands better.

Limit the duration of training sessions. If you try to focus for a long period of time on one command, your dog will show signs of boredom and begin to get antsy. Aim for less than 10 minutes per session.

Primary Reinforcement

Primary reinforcement is a proven principle that is useful in training dogs. Primary reinforcement involves utilizing something that the dog loves to reward good behavior. Primary reinforcements include using food as treats and rubbing your dog’s belly. Doing this will show your dog alternatives for obtaining what he wants appropriately.

Now that you have been provided with this useful information, you are on your way to having a well behaved dog. Once you get the information you need, training your dog will be a piece of cake!
