The proper age to begin training your puppy.

August 20, 2013 By

Lots of people decide on adopting a dog without actually thinking about the consequences. A dog is a real commitment. If your dog is trained, he will be much less likely to run into problems or display aggression. Whether you are a new pet owner or have a dedicated dog in your home, the ideas from this article should be of use to you as you work on a training program.

Ensure that your dog gets plenty of exercise and stimulation. Dogs get bored just as easily as children. When dogs are bored they are difficult to train. Your dogs will obey more quickly if you keep them well exercised. Lead your dog on the path to fitness by walking or jogging every day.

A number of repetitions will be necessary before your dog will be able to master a new command. You might have to keep repeating something to a dog as much as fifty times for it to ‘click’. Use the command over and over again until the dog gets the hint.

The first step of training your pooch should be to assert your control. Make sure he knows that you know what you are doing and are in control of the situation. Then he will look to you and defer to your judgment. On walks with your dog, you should lead him and not the other way around.

You can show your dog how to do tricks, get some treats. First, have the dog lay down. Next, hold the treat close to the floor on one side of the dog’s head, and slowly bringing it upwards and over to the dog’s other side. They should follow that treat with their nose, which should cause them to roll over. Say the command, “roll over” when he rolls over. Never become frustrated if it does not happen right away. Once he does learn how, he will be a celebrity among other dogs.

Shock Collars

Refrain from using shock collars and similar training devices. They almost never work as advertised and they are expensive to boot. Additionally, the use of devices such as shock collars can break your dog’s spirit and ruin him as an enjoyable family pet. Generally, techniques such as these actually produce negative results.

In dog training, use the same volume and tone of voice when you state a command. Using a even, official tone will let your dog know you are serious. It will also help him distinguish between a disciplinary tone, which is sharper, and a commanding tone.

When approaching a strange or unfamiliar dog, approach slowly, while allowing the dog to sniff the back side of your hand. The dog will become familiar with your smell and recognize the scent in the future. Dogs that know your smell are less likely to fear you and more likely to obey commands.

Even if you have had your dog for an extended period of time and they have not been properly trained, you can use the information that has been provided to properly train them. An untrained dog can inadvertently injure someone simply because they do not know better.

At Pawsitive Solutions, we specialise in helping you get the best possible relationship with your dog.
