Useful tips for training your dog

Training your dog can have many benefits. It can make your dog act better and help you become better at being a pet owner. The tips below can help you train your dog correctly. You will see that you have gained something from your investment of time and enjoyed yourself as well.

To strengthen your training efforts, you can use a designated verbal command to help your animal know what your expectations are and when they have been fulfilled. The word “yes” may serve as a good gap-filler in between the dog’s good behavior and the giving of the reward.

Consistency

In dog training, use the same volume and tone of voice when you state a command. This lets the dog know you are serious. It is important that your dog be able to distinguish between a command and a reprimand.

As you are working to house train your pet, select a single term or phrase that you will use. Use the same word or phrase each time you bring him out to go to the bathroom so that he understands what you want him to do and makes a memory link between the phrase and the act.

If your dog leaps on you, hold his paws and squeeze them a little so he will know this is not acceptable. This will not hurt him, but it is quite uncomfortable. Before long, they will stop their habit of jumping on people due to this association.

If you are thinking of hiring an animal specialist, be sure that you check their reputation and interview them thoroughly. Many of these professionals have different techniques that they will use to train a dog. You should know whether or not you agree with their methods before hiring them to train your pet!

Encouragement

Positively encourage your dog without using treats. Use treats to improve the behavior of dogs. However, it’s unlikely that you will carry treats around every single day for the rest of your dog’s life. Try patting your dog on the back and giving him an “enthusiastic, that a boy.”

If you plan to allow your pet to eliminate indoors, provide an area that is designated for that purpose. Line the area with potty pads and slowly shrink the size of the spot until just one potty pad designates the exact spot you have set aside for their use.

Your dog needs to be mentally stimulated just like a human does. Take your dog on a walk, give them toys and bones to keep them busy. If your dog is bored, it is more likely to get into mischief and display destructive behavior.

The most important part of dog training is to ensure that dog know its name. You dog needs to know his name well for you to have control over his behavior. Do this ten times per day. Avoid confusion by not calling your dog to you for punishment.

Chewing

Pet owners generally place chewing on top of their list of undesirable behaviors. Both your dog’s health and your personal property will benefit from avoiding chewing. Start by removing items he’d like to chew so he’s not tempted. There are also various bitter tasting sprays that you can use to keep dogs away from immovable objects like heavy furniture.

As you can see by now, there are many benefits to dog training. It can actually be fun to train a dog as well. Your relationship with your dog will only get stronger.

Training a dog should start on day one

September 25, 2013 By

You love the dog and your stuff, but your dog doesn’t love your stuff. Your dog isn’t aware of the value of your things, so items that seem fun to a dog may be played with. This article will give you advice on how to prevent your dog from chewing on things.

If you are working on crate training your indoor puppy or dog, you can always try a few tricks. A dog is naturally hesitant about a crate at first. A way to get them interested is to put their favorite toy in the crate, then shut the door. They will see the toy inside the crate and will want in the crate to get it. Once they go in the crate, praise them so that they know they did well.

Generous rewards are a key part of training. If you give your dog some treats at the proper time, they will respond to training. Dogs will not understand why you are rewarding them if you wait too long to do it.

If you intend to use a crate in dog training, make sure the crate is an appropriate size for your dog. Don’t forget, your puppy will grow. Choose a crate that is a good enough size for an adult for when your puppy grows. The dog must have enough room to lie down and turn around without getting crowded.

Always be patient when you train your dog. This prevents both of you from getting irritated and angry with the training. Your dog wants to do what you ask him to, but you have to give him the commands in a way in which he understands what is expected.

“Leave it” is an important command to teach, starting when you bring your dog home. Teaching them to “leave it” will stop them from destructive chewing and coming in contact with something that could potentially hurt them.

Don’t overdo your training sessions, keep them brief and interesting for best results. If you spend too much time doing one training exercise, your dog will become bored. Ten minutes is about the length of time a dog can handle.

Reduce as many accidents as possible when you’re toilet training your dog. Learn to recognize what your dog does when he needs to go out. Common ones include whining, pacing and even consistent staring. Don’t put it off when your dog is doing these things. Take your dog outside and escort him to his favorite spot. Good toilet behavior is worthy of praise. In time, he will ask you to take him out.

If your dog is accompanying you on a trip, be sure to bring along whatever your dog needs for sleeping, eating and eliminating. You need to bring bowls, his leash and bathroom supplies to ensure you can travel comfortably. It is often just as easy to buy a bag of food once you reach your destination as it is to pack it up and bring it along.

Don’t use punitive methods to train your dog. Try to prevent negative behavior, and show your puppy how you expect him to behave if he makes a mistake. Training is only successful if you can build a good relationship with your pet – take the time to teach your dog in a positive manner.

Finally, your dog needs to learn to stop chewing on your stuff. A well-behaved pet is less likely to injure himself and will also help you avoid the cost and frustration of household repairs. The tips provided here should aid you in developing a successful training program that yields the results you are seeking.

How to make sure your dog is properly trained

September 4, 2013 By

Puppies are truly heart-stealing little beasts! If you are a new pet owner or are considering adopting a new family member, you’re in for a real treat! Training has to begin early and be completed often. Your pet will understand what is expected of him; you can have complete confidence that he will behave whether or not you are home. Read the tips and tricks below for some great dog-training advice.

Don’t reinforce your dog’s negative behavior by accident. Withhold treats and attention when your dog exhibits any undesirable behaviors. For instance, if your dog does not sit when commanded, do not rub his head affectionately unless he actually sits.

When giving a command to your dog, you should always use the exact same kind of voice and the same volume. Your voice tone lets your dog know that you are serious and that you expect their obedience. It can also help the dog realize the distinction between disciplinary tones and other types of commands.

When you get your puppy, be sure to create a bond to him by helping him learn his name. Simply start by calling his name as often as possible. Once he learns his name, you can encourage him to come to you when called. These are the first words your puppy should learn. It’s important to spend a lot of time playing with your puppy, this will help your puppy get to know you and learn to trust you. This will make it easier to train him as he gets older.

Leash-training starts with a loose leash. Dogs are often eager to explore new territory when they get the opportunity to go for a walk. Excited pups tend to place some strain on the limitations of the leash. The smart owner discourages this behavior, teaching the dog to walk with a slack leash instead.

The first step in leash training your new puppy is by putting a collar on him while you play with him. Helping your dog feel comfortable with a collar on is critical because it helps ease the adjustment to a leash, and it also facilitates identification of the dog should he become lost.

A good training trick is to know the grooming needs that your dog needs. Some dogs require a small amount of grooming, while others may require meticulous grooming each week. A groomed dog is happier, cleaner, and healthier.

Is your dog eating a nutritionally-sound diet? Like children, dogs can become hyperactive, inattentive and even a little bit bratty when their diet isn’t up to par. Your dog’s diet should be adapted to its species and its age so your dog is full of energy. Your vet should be able to recommend the right food for your dog.

It’s important your dog always has an understanding of right from wrong. Everyone in your house needs to set these boundaries too. It can erase what you have accomplished.

Your dog should enjoy his training and look forward to it. Keep the sessions between 10-15 minutes, as this is about the attention span of most dogs. Be generous when it is time to reward! Your dog should enjoy lots of praise for a job well-done. Make the training process fun.

Hopefully, you’ve read the tips listed here and learned a thing or two when it comes to having a good owner/pet relationship. Learn the above techniques and begin using them today. It’s inevitable that a loyal dog or adorable puppy will have your heart. Training is a vital part of success. Your dog needs to be properly trained. Congrats on your new companion!

Dog training tips that every pet owner should know

August 18, 2013 By

Many people are interested in dog training, but are unaware of how to begin. This is perhaps because they lack the necessary dog training knowlege. To train dogs properly, it is necessary to acquire knowledge about different techniques. Read this information to learn how to properly train a dog.

Your training sessions must be long enough for your dog to learn the desired behavior but no so long that he becomes bored. Start out training for just a few minutes each day and work up to half an hour or so over time. Observe when your dog starts to stop paying attention during the session.

Select an appropriately sized crate to foster solid crate training results. Keep in mind that they get larger as they age. Choose a crate which will be suitable for the puppy when he matures into an adult. Your dog needs to have the room to get around the crate and not feel cramped.

To strengthen your training efforts, you can use a designated verbal command to help your animal know what your expectations are and when they have been fulfilled. If you do not have a treat you can reward your dog with, pet it and talk to it in a soft voice until you find a treat.

As your dog responds to his training, you can begin to allow him more freedom. Maintaining a proper balance between obeying your commands and having some freedom will lead to a happier dog. Make sure you do not provide excessive freedom right away, or backsliding may occur.

When you approach a strange dog, make sure you approach him slowly and allow the dog to sniff your hand. As you do this, you give the dog an opportunity to acclimate to your scent and become used to your presence. When he knows who you are, he’ll do what you ask.

To house train your pup, get him on a set feeding and potty schedule every day. This can help you avoid accidents on the carpet by becoming aware of when the dog needs to go. A schedule will train your dog to know when he will get to go out next.

“Leave it” is a very important command that teaches your dog to drop whatever it is holding. This should be the first command you teach. This can help stop them from chewing on your belongings and prevents them from ingesting harmful things away from the home.

A squirt of water in your dog’s face can discourage biting and scratching behaviors. You dog needs to learn what behaviors are acceptable as well as those that are not. In short order, the dog is sure to cease such behavior, and assume the role of fun, yet obedient animal.

All dog trainers would be wise to introduce their dogs to social settings often. This will help them to become social, so that they are comfortable with those around them. Doing this will also decrease the likelihood that the dog will respond poorly when introduced to new environments.

When you are traveling together with a dog, make a dog travel bag. Pack plenty of food and water as well as clean-up materials, bedding and potty bags. Do not fret about food for your dog, you can buy it wherever you are.

Hopefully with this knowledge, you will be more confident in training your dog. There is a lot more you need to know about dog training. Do more research and apply the efficient strategies you find to train your dog successfully.
