Types of Dog Aggression and How to Nip Them in the Bud

April 25, 2023 By

Dogs are our most beloved pets. They are loyal companions who offer us friendship and affection, always there for us unwaveringly through the good times and the bad.

However, it’s always worth remembering that dogs are animals, and as such their behaviour can be at odds with what we find acceptable. Aggression is a natural instinct in dogs, but when it becomes problematic and interferes with our lives and our relationships, owners must take steps to address the issue. We’ve listed some of the most common types of dog aggression and discussed strategies for nipping them in the bud. Read on to find out more.

Resource Aggression

First on our list of types of dog aggression is resource aggression. Also referred to as resource guarding and possession aggression, resource aggression is when a dog displays aggressive behaviour, such as growling, snapping, and biting, over things like food or toys.

Trouble with your dog? Try simple training techniques!

September 7, 2013 By

Are you contemplating of getting a pet and you do not know how to begin on how to train it? Do you currently own a dog and have been desperately trying to eliminate negative behaviors? You need to go over this article. Keep reading on how to make sure your dog really becomes man’s best friend.

When you’re working on training you dog, you must always try to teach it how to know that it’s their home. Meal times should be given within the crate while the door remains open throughout the meal. They’ll build a positive view of the crate this way.

Multiple repetitions will be necessary for a dog to learn new commands. You may need to repeat the same command lesson from 25 to 30 times before your dog learns it. Try using the command more often and be very patient if you want your dog to learn.

Right at the moment they do the behavior you are trying to reinforce, give the verbal command of approval. Certain words like “yes” are great for bridging the time between obeying an order and receiving the reward.

One of the very first commands you should teach a new puppy is the “leave it” command, which tells them to drop an item and step back from it. This simple command is beneficial in making him stop on chewing furniture inside the house.

When training your dog, keep track of time during each session. It is possible that your dog will lose interest if it is made to do the same thing over and over. Early on, your training sessions should be limited to less than 10 minutes.

Make sure that both you and your dog enjoy the daily training. It builds a strong bond between the two of you and encourages them to want to please you. Although dog training can be fun, you don’t really want to spend all your time in training mode.

Aggressive Dogs

A good dog training tip is to always be aware of other dogs when you’re taking your dog for a walk. There are aggressive dogs, and not every owner is at fault. Keep your dog at a distance from angry or aggressive dogs.

To keep your dog from biting at furniture or people, or scratching at doors, spray him or her with a bottle of water. This method shows your dog that what they are doing is wrong. Your dog will instead focus on good behaviors with more positive outcomes.

Never reward bad behavior with the intent of quickly ending a certain behavior. This will give your dog the wrong mindset during the training session. For example, you should avoid offering a treat to the animal to stop it from barking.

Training should be disciplined but also fun for the dog. Training sessions should be kept to 10-15 minutes maximum so your dog enjoys the full benefits of his attention span. Give your dog rewards that vary and come often. Give your dog plenty of praise and this will make him happy. If you make training fun, he will enjoy listening, too.

Don’t wait any longer, get started on training your dog! Implement these tips right away to teach your dog obedience. Dogs want to please their owners. They just need your firm hand to point out the right things to do. Get started right away.
