Training your dog with a few key tips

August 19, 2013 By

Dogs can be like family and you want to find positive ways to train them. This article is full of helpful advice and techniques that are tailored for you to use as you train your dog. Knowledge is power and this article should pump you up!

Make sure to let your pet know a crate is their home initially. Leave the crate door open and place food inside of it when it’s time to eat. This way that start to like their crate even more.

Be sure to keep your dog active and engaged a great deal of the time. Dogs can get bored very easily. Bored dogs are harder to train. When your dog gets regular exercise, he will be much happier and will pay attention more easily. Go on runs or long walks together.

Dogs generally focus on one thing while ignoring everything around them, unless something interrupts that intense focus. If you keep up with his training, your dog will look to you more often for direction rather than looking to the environment.

Do not reinforce any negative behaviors accidentally. In basic terms, this means refusing to reward your dog, via attention or treats, for doing any action that you are trying to get them to stop doing. If they jump on you, don’t pet them, for example.

You should always call your dog in the same way. Start commands by using his name. Using their name will help to personalize your command. Dogs are more likely to respond immediately whenever their name is called because they are aware that you want their attention.

Positive reinforcement is the best way to train a dog. Use positive language to reward the dog, as well as petting and small treats on occasion. Do not ever scream at or strike your dog. These tactics backfire and just make your dog believe you are incompetent. Firmness, positivity and consistency are the keys to solid dog training.

Pay strict attention to your body language and tone of voice anytime you are training a pet. Dogs are great at understanding how their trainer feels. Try using a stern tone to really convey your message to your dog.

Training Sessions

Wearing out a puppy with too much training and information, will be extremely counterproductive. Puppies can’t pay attention for too long and are not very good at focusing on something for long periods of time, so limit the duration of training sessions. If training sessions are too long, the puppy won’t remember the specifics of the training session, just that is was grueling and exhausting. This will make it harder to train him next time.

When house training your new puppy, accidents are likely to happen from time to time. Clean accidents up immediately to assist in your training efforts. The smell from a pet’s feces or urine can stay in the carpet. The puppy may return to that spot if it isn’t cleaned quickly. There are a number of products available at pet stores that get rid of these odors.
