Train your dog to obey your commands

September 9, 2013 By

Do you want to know how to train your pet to become a show dog? The article below is jam packed with useful tips and advice to help you train your dog.

When crate training your new puppy, take it in small manageable steps so the animal can become accustomed to the changes easily. If they are uncomfortable with the door closed then try to feed them snacks to reassure them that they are okay. Begin by leaving the dog in the crate for about ten seconds, then increase that time by small increments. If the dog becomes overwhelmed, it means that you are moving too quickly for them.

You have to be consistent with the crate training of your new puppy. Shortly after you allow your puppy to exit the crate, he must be given the chance to relieve himself in the designated area. The dog will grow his bladder so he can hold it for longer and longer this way.

Be careful not to reward bad behaviors without realizing it. Withhold treats and attention when your dog exhibits any undesirable behaviors. For instance, if you are trying to train your dog to not jump on you, you shouldn’t be petting them whenever they do so.

Treats are necessary when teaching a dog fancy tricks like rolling over. The first step is to get the dog to lay down. Next, hold a treat near the floor on one side of his head, slowly bring the treat up and over the dogs head to the other side. This will cause your dog to use their nose to follow the treat. As a result, your dog will roll over. Whenever you dog does roll over, actually say the words, “roll over.” Continue to do this until your dog actually rolls over whenever you say the words without using the treat. This may take time, so don’t become frustrated.

Be sure to keep your treats close by when you’re training your dog. You want your pet to know that you are pleased with his behavior. Doing so leaves no question as to whether a behavior is considered acceptable or strictly forbidden.

Dogs need an hour or more of exercise each day, aside from their potty breaks. Your training will be easier and more effective if your dog gets good daily exercise. An exercised dog leads to having a responsive and happy dog.

In order for your training to be effective, you have to understand that you’ll need to be firm. You should not be yelling at your dog all the time. Be strict only when your dog disobeys or adopts an attitude you do not approve of. You will be best friends with your dog.

Your dog training needs to be consistent. If more than one family member is taking part in training the pet, be sure that each person utilizes the same commands as well as a similar discipline and reward system. When your dog only needs to understand a single set of directions, it is easier to learn and adopt the desired behaviors.

When you are trying to house train a puppy, it is not going to learn overnight, so be prepared. Clean accidents right away to speed up training. If your carpet begins to smell like urine and feces, your puppy will believe that it is the right place to potty and return to it again and again. There are a number of products available at pet stores that get rid of these odors.

In summation, your show dog’s success is important for both of you. The tips provided in this article are proven to be the best ways to train your show dog in every aspect. While different dogs will respond better to different training methods, these should get you off to a good start.
