Things that you need to know to effectively train your dog

September 18, 2013 By

Your dog is important to you, but so are your possessions. With pets, it’s a bit more difficult to instill this appreciation for your property — especially if it appears particularly tasty to your dog. In this article, we will review methods for teaching your dog to limit chewing to his own toys.

Understand that during training, what your dog eats will go out of their system. In order to foster routine toilet habits, give your dog good food between 2 and 3 times daily on a firm schedule. This will help you figure out when the best time is to take your dog out and avoid accidents.

Modify and update your dog’s training as necessary, so he remains in compliance with the rules. Do not assume that your dog will remember his training all his life. Like their human owners, pets truly are creatures of habit. It’s important to be consistent with the rules for your dog.

Shock Collars

Don’t use things like shock collars. In addition to being very expensive, they usually do not work as well as the more traditional training techniques. In addition, shock collars and related devices can actually irritate your dog and eradicate current good behaviors. It is common for these tactics to create adverse behavior.

Remember it is important to be patient when you are training your dog. This ensures that you both do not get frustrated. Your dog will do its best, but give your dog enough time to remember orders. You need to remember that your puppy needs to form the association between the word and the behavior you expect.

When your dog does something unacceptable, make sure that it becomes known. The dog will not experience pain, but just a brief discomfort. In time, they will cease jumping on humans, as they will have the negative association with the squeezing.

If you plan on housebreaking your pet, you must work hard to avoid any preventable mistakes. Watch your dog carefully and learn the signs that they need to go outside. If your dog is pacing or whining, you need to take them outside. The moment your pet begins to do any of these things, don’t waste a single moment. Head outdoors to the assigned potty spot right away. Be sure to give him praise for proper toileting. Over time, he is going to learn to try to get outside to go.

Wearing out a puppy with too much training and information, will be extremely counterproductive. Puppies can only handle small amounts of training, so it is best to keep training to short but intense periods of time. If you try to do too much too fast, he will associated it as a negative experience and will resist in the future.

Praise your dog to reinforce good actions. Smile, offers treats and show excitement to relay to your dog that he is doing something positive. Do not reward undesirable behavior, because the dog will get mixed messages.

The “down” command is something you should teach your dog. This will be particularly helpful in emergency situations. A dog who is well trained to drop on command is a much safer pooch.

In summary, you have to prevent your dog from negative behavior. This stops the dog from getting sick and will keep you from getting frustrated and annoyed. Using the tips you’ve just read will help you train your dog effectively.
