Important tips about training your dog

August 31, 2013 By

When you are just entering the process of dog training, any tips can be extremely useful. The following article will help to make training your dog a little easier.

Try to view things from your dog’s perspective. Sometimes a dog will be a slow learner, and this can be frustrating. You should never give up on them, try looking at it from your dog’s vantage point. You should think about how your dog might see things in the world.

Teaching dogs to roll over can be easy, provided some treats are on hand. First, make sure the dog is in a laying position. Then, position a treat near the floor to one side of him, raise it up and move it over to the opposite side. He should follow the treat with his nose, causing him to roll his whole body over. Say “roll over” as he performs the action so that he’ll learn the command. Do not get mad if it takes several tries. Once they learn this particular trick, they will be popular at the dog park!

To house train your pup, get him on a set feeding and potty schedule every day. This way, you are aware of when your dog will need to do his business, and you can take him outside before an accident occurs. Being consistent will teach the dog to hold it until it is time to go outside.

Among the first commands that you should teach your puppy is the command “leave it,” which tells the puppy to drop whatever he has in his mouth and back away from it. This simple command is beneficial in making him stop on chewing furniture inside the house.

If your pet is prone to jumping onto your lap, you should gently squeeze his paws after he does so. This communicates that the behavior is unacceptable and should be avoided. While this will not seriously hurt the animal, it is certainly unpleasant and therefore makes a powerful statement. They should learn to stop jumping because they don’t like the reaction they get.

Avoid letting your dog have accidents when potty training. Learn to recognize what your dog does when he needs to go out. Some of the most common and obvious displays include whining, sniffing and pacing. If you see your dog exhibiting these behaviors, jump right up and grab the leash. Get outside right away to the dog’s favorite spot. Reward the dog for using the bathroom outdoors. In time, he will ask you to take him out.

Silence your dog’s excessive barking by teaching them a silencing command. When he barks, show him his favorite treat, and repeat the command. “Quiet” works well. Then, you can award your dog with a treat. If this is done with sufficient frequency, the dog is sure to associate treats with the command to be silent.

As you can see from the above list of tips, dog training can be very useful in getting your dog to behave and to even do a few cool tricks. You do not have to pay for long and expensive training classes. Don’t put it off. Get started today to develop a well-behaved, happy pet.
