Having trouble training your dog? Try these tips

August 12, 2013 By

To a new owner, training a dog may seem like an impossible task. You can have information overload when you think of all the resources you have at your disposal. The following article will give you a few strategies you can use to help you begin your doggy training process.

There are a few tricks you can try when attempting to crate train a puppy or dog. Many dogs are intimidated by the crate. To cure this, place something they enjoy in it and shut the door. They will want to get to the bone, which means going into the crate. After he goes in the crate, reward him with praise and a treat.

Rewarding your dog properly and generously is important when it comes to training them. It’s very important to provide treats at the proper time. The reason is that dogs may not grasp why they receive rewards if they are given at odd times.

Refrain from using higher end training gadgets, such as shock collar devices. They are both expensive and unlikely to work properly. If you start using these methods, your dog will not be responsive to anything else. This kind of approach often ends in disaster.

One of the first commands you need to teach your dog is how to step away from things you do not want him to touch. This command teaches them to cease chewing on furniture or items around the house and it keeps them safe from filthy or hazardous items outside.

Limit the duration of training sessions. Spending too much time just on one aspect of training will bore your dog and waste your efforts. Ten minutes is about the length of time a dog can handle.

Have fun with your dog each day when training. The dog will respond more positively to training if you create a better bond between you and them. While training can be fun, try having play time with your dog every day for a period of time.

Make sure you avoid all the accidents you can whenever you’re toilet-training your dog. Learn to recognize what your dog does when he needs to go out. He could be snuffing, pacing or even whining. Don’t put it off when your dog is doing these things. Put his leash on and take him to the place you wish him to go. Praise him for appropriate toileting. Your dog will eventually learn how to alert you when it’s time for them to use the restroom.

If your pet is a problematic barker, try this training tip. Choose a simple word or directive you can use to quiet him down and discourage barking. If your dog barks, repeat the order, offer a treat when they stop barking and pet them to show you are satisfied. Then, you can award your dog with a treat. In time, your dog will learn to be quiet if he wants a treat.

These tips have hopefully given you some insight and usable suggestions. Following the advice contained in this article will lead to your being a happy canine owner with a properly trained companion.
