Give your dog positive encouragement when training

August 4, 2013 By

When you choose a dog from an animal rescue, its behavior may be quite a bit more subdued at the shelter than it will be once it settles into your home. With some consistent training, you can transform your rambunctious dog into an intelligent and attentive companion.

Give your puppy time to be okay with a crate by taking the training one small step at a time. If your dog seems comfortable inside the crate when the door is open, shut it and feed them a treat. Start with short times numbering in mere seconds, and increase the intervals gradually. If the dog becomes overwhelmed, it means that you are moving too quickly for them.

Timing is essential when you are training your dog, so you want to spend enough time training them but do not want go overboard. Gradually increase the amount of time you spend training them each session. Watch to see if the dog’s attention begins to fade during sessions.

Your dog should always give you its attention when asked. Eventually, you will be able to ensure that your dog is more focused on you and your commands than other distractions.

If you intend to use a crate in dog training, make sure the crate is an appropriate size for your dog. Your little puppy will get bigger, remember! Choose a crate that is a good enough size for an adult for when your puppy grows. The dog must have enough room to lie down and turn around without getting crowded.

If your dog jumps up, quickly bring your knee up to encounter his chest and say OFF! This will not hurt your dog if done lightly, but it will impart the information that jumping up is not appropriate. They will quickly learn to avoid doing it in order to avoid the sensation.

Always be aware of your tone of voice when you have to discipline your dog. Dogs tend to be well in tune with how their trainers are feeling. A disciplinary command is best delivered in a stern tone.

Keep tabs on the number of treats you give to your dog as a reward in order to avoid making him gain weight. To keep your dog healthy, you really need to monitor their treat intake. It’s an aspect often overlooked.

A loose leash is important for training. Dogs are often eager to explore new territory when they get the opportunity to go for a walk. Many dogs will strain against the leash due to their eagerness. A good dog trainer will work to discourage this and teach the dog to walk with a bit of slack on the leash.

Never give up on your dog, no matter how exhausted you are. Constant reinforcement and praise are essential when maintaining the training your dog learned in how to behave. Training your dog should be as consistent as feeding or taking him or her outside.

The “down” command is something you should teach your dog. This is a command that is great as a foundation for other commands, and can also be used alone in emergencies. When the animal is familiar with the ‘down’ command, he can be more effectively controlled with little advance warning. This is important when others’ safety is at stake.

A lot of pet owners are pleasantly surprised how canine behavior training can fit seamlessly into their lives and just how soon they can see positive effects. Therefore, should you start to feel frustration with your dog, put some of the following advice to work.
