Every dog needs to be trained properly

August 1, 2013 By

Your happiness, as well as your dog’s, is based on its training. An obedient dog will be easier to live with and you will know what can be expected. With a trained dog, you won’t worry when you’re together in public, you have visitors or he is home without you. It will not always be easy to train your dog. It takes a lot of time and effort to properly train a dog.

When you begin house training, select a phrase to use repeatedly with your pet. By using a dedicated expression to handle training commands, you can make it easier for your pet to focus and make connections. Although it sounds silly to repeat something like “poopie time!” over and over, the consistency will help your dog make the right link between being taken outside and relieving himself.

Have a treat prepared for rewarding your dog when they follow a command properly. Giving a treat is how you show your dog that you appreciate the behavior. By rewarding your dog after it does something you want, it will realize that it’s doing a good thing. Therefore, it will be more likely to continue this good behavior.

If you are going to be doing any training you need to know how to enforce the rules. Primary reinforcement involves utilizing something that the dog loves to reward good behavior. This may mean giving food items as treats or scratching the dog’s tummy. This lets your dog know how to earn something it wants.

Consistency is the key to training. When others are involved in the training, everyone should be on the same page and use the same commands. Your dog will be more willing to be trained if he knows what to expect.

When it comes to training a puppy, it is not a good idea to provide too much information and training at one time. Puppies do not have a very long attention span and limited energy, keep it brief and positive. Your puppy will happier with the experience, and less resistant to your future efforts. He will be looking forward to them instead.

When training a dog to a leash it is important to keep the leash loose. Dogs are often eager to explore new territory when they get the opportunity to go for a walk. Excited pups tend to place some strain on the limitations of the leash. Great dog owners don’t allow this behavior. Instead, they encourage their dogs to walk with some slack in their leash.

Do not give up when you are trying to train your dog. Your dog will need constant reinforcement, otherwise the behaviors and actions you have taught it may be lost. Just as you need to keep feeding and sheltering your dog, training is a never-ending process.

“Down” is an important command for dogs to learn. You can use it in an emergency, for example. The down command can have a dog drop down at any given second, which is great for safety reasons.

Improving the dog’s recall is key. Your dog has to learn to come to you, regardless of the situation. Build up this behavior step-by-step or distractions will take over. Recall will become very useful if your dog is in danger or about to attack someone, which is why you should spend some time on this command.

Most of all, training a dog lays out the dog/owner relationship rules. You enjoy each other much more once those guidelines are outlined. Keep in mind that you must continue to reinforce everything you have taught your dog. Constantly review what you have taught him and correct any issues. After your dog has learned the basics, you can work together more effectively to instill more complex behaviors.

At Pawsitive Solutions, we specialise in helping you get the best possible relationship with your dog.
