Dog won’t listen? Training him will help!

July 30, 2013 By

The reason why so many dogs are in shelters is because it doesn’t work out well with the owner. However, this does not have to be. A well-trained pooch can be a welcome addition to any family. As long as you are willing to put the time in, training your dog can be an easy and fun process.

It is important that you also train your dog at mealtime with a specific routine. A predictable feeding schedule and removing the food promptly will teach them to eat their food quickly. Doing so will encourage your pooch to eat efficiently.

A healthy diet is important to the health and well-being of your dog. Too many table scraps can unbalance your dog’s diet. Without proper nutrition, your dog’s general health will suffer and there may also be direct effects on behavior. Simply enhancing a dog’s diet can make a big difference in its receptiveness to training.

It is easy to train a roll with treats. The first step is a simple “lay” command. The next step is to hold a treat close to the floor by the dog’s head then continue to move the treat over his head until you reach the other side. He’ll follow your hand and roll over completely. As he is rolling over say, “roll over” and praise them immediately when they do. It may take some time for your dog to perfect the trick, but it’s a popular move and one that is sure to impress others.

Use the same hand signal or voice command to get your dog’s attention. Use his or her name when giving a command. This will get his attention so he knows to follow the command. Dogs know their name and will be attentive when you speak it.

Be firm with your dog when training, for its own sake. This does not mean you should continually admonish your dog. Balance firmness with love for best results. This will help you build a great relationship with your pup.

If you want to make sure your dog will behave throughout life, it’s important that you always train them. Training should not stop because he is not a puppy anymore. Reinforce the positive behaviors, reward your dog for being obedient and punish your dog for its bad behavior.

To reduce your dog’s barking, try to understand what is causing it. It can be a sound, or being face to face with other people or other animals. This will help your dog understand that barking is unnecessary.

Consistency is key when training a dog. If there are several trainers, ensure that they are all being consistent with rewards and commands. If everyone involved uses the same commands, your dog will learn more quickly and easily.

Do not wear out your new puppy with an excessive training regiment. A puppy has a short attention span and limited energy to focus, so keep your sessions brief and as positive as possible. If you try to teach too much, he won’t like the training sessions and won’t remember everything. This will only frustrate you over time.

Grooming is very important. Be sure to research any special grooming and hygiene requirements associated with the breed of your dog. Some breeds require a lot more grooming than others, sometimes on a weekly basis. Grooming keeps your dog happy and clean, and greatly reduces the risk of disease.

As you can now see, it’s not impossible to teach your dog how to behave. All that your dog needs is good training, the right amount of attention, and plenty of support and love from you. By following these steps you can make your dog a part of the family.

At Pawsitive Solutions, we specialise in helping you get the best possible relationship with your dog.
