Advice on how to properly train your dog

August 11, 2013 By

Everyone likes having a dog because they bring joy and love into our lives. Adding a puppy to your household involves a great deal of adjustment. You must train your dog extensively. Use the tips from this article and your dog will soon be properly trained.

Your dog’s diet plays a huge role in their training and establishing a definitive feeding routine is important. Feed your dog at the same times every day, so that he knows what to expect. Shortly, the dog will start finishing their food well before you plan to take the dish away.

It takes many repetitions before a dog is able to learn new commands. It’s very common to repeat a command up to 50 times before your dog can learn it. Just remember to keep trying and be patient. Eventually, your dog will learn.

When giving a command to your dog, you should always use the exact same kind of voice and the same volume. Maintaining the same tone lets your dog know that you are serious and they should obey your commands. In time, your dog will understand what you want regardless of which words you use.

Most dogs learn best with positive reinforcement. Use a happy tone when you are rewarding your dog; pet him a lot, and give him a little treat once in a while. You should not hit or yell at your dog. This doesn’t work well and only succeeds in teaching your dog that its master is out of control. Maintain a calm attitude anytime that your dog does wrong so that you can have a relationship o mutual respect with your dog.

Let your dog get used to triggers that make them bark to reduce the behavior. Everything from a sound to a particular person could be a trigger. Your goal is to show your pet that barking is not an appropriate response to these common stimuli.

Wearing out a puppy with too much training and information, will be extremely counterproductive. Puppies do not have a very long attention span and limited energy, keep it brief and positive. If you do too much the puppy will just forget what you have taught him, and remember it in a negative way, it will be harder to help him in the end.

Start prepping your puppy for training by rewarding his good choices. It is far simpler to teach a dog to do something the right way than to break bad habits. To avoid begging at the table, avoid giving the dog food off the table to begin with.

When house training your new puppy, accidents are likely to happen from time to time. Make sure to clean up accidents as soon as they happen. The smell from a pet’s feces or urine can stay in the carpet. The puppy may return to that spot if it isn’t cleaned quickly. A pet shop in your area will carry products specifically for this problem.

It’s a good idea to keep in mind the number of treats you are giving your dog throughout the day. Giving him too many will add unneeded calories to his diet and cause him to become overweight. Treats will add up when you are training your dog, be careful to not overlook them.

Now you are armed with the knowledge of how to train your puppy. Be patient when training your dog, and most importantly, ensure your dog is aware of when their behavior is appropriate. You cannot expect to master these tips in mere days, but as long as you stay dedicated, you can succeed in training your dog.
