Trying to train your dog? Follow these handy tips!

September 25, 2013 By

A lot of dogs are given away to the pound because the owner does not take the time to train them right. Properly trained dogs have the potential to be charming, happy and loving parts of any family. If you can spend some time and follow instructions, you can easily train your dog.

If you have to give your dog a verbal correction, be sure that they are sharp, to the point, and short. Don’t scream and yell and throw a fit. Simply address the issue and move on. The tone of your voice should let them know you are serious about the command you are making.

Ensure your dogs are active and getting a lot of exercises. When dogs have nothing to do, they can get bored. Bored dogs are harder to train. Your dog is going to be a lot more attentive when it has received enough exercise. Get out for some long walks and runs with your dog.

When crate training a young puppy you must be consistent. When you let the puppy out of his crate you must immediately and unfailingly allow him the opportunity to relieve himself. Eventually, the puppy will learn to wait to pee until given the opportunity.

Do not tie up your dogs too closely. They could tangle the chains in such a way so that one or both of the dogs are stuck or injured. If dogs get tangled up too severely, one can get wrapped up so badly it could close off the airway, and he could die.

Give your dog more freedom as he or she gets further along in the training program. If you can instill a healthy sense of obedience with an appreciation for your love, you and your dog are guaranteed to enjoy your time together. Just make sure your dog is properly trained before giving him so much slack.

You must teach your dog how to walk correctly when the leash is attached. This will help to keep both of you safe while taking walks.

Always be patient when you train your dog. A patient attitude will make the training process less stressful for the both of you. Your dog wants to make you happy, but sometimes it just does not understand you.

“Leave it” is a command that should be taught and reinforced early on. This simple command will get them to stop chewing on household items or furniture, and can keep them away from dirty or potentially dangerous items outside the home.

If your canine jumps on top of you, gently grab their paws and squeeze them; this will tell them that they cannot jump. Do something that makes them uncomfortable so that they can associate their action with something negative. Since it is so uncomfortable, they’ll avoid jumping on people.

As you can now see, it’s not impossible to teach your dog how to behave. The needs of your pet need to be paramount in your mind when it comes time to train your animal. With the suggestions presented here, you’ll be ready to make a dog into a beloved family member and a life-long companion.
