Dog training- an excellent way to achieve an accomplished dog

September 11, 2013 By

Dog training may appear overwhelming to someone inexperienced with it. The large number of resources available might make it hard for you to decide where to start. The tips below can help you start training your dog properly.

There are different tricks you can try when you are crate training your dog. If the dog doesn’t want to go inside the crate, put a rawhide bone in there and shut the door. They can see and smell that bone, and they will want in the crate to have it. After your dog goes into the crate, give positive reinforcement to increase the chance that he will go into the crate again.

Train your dog to remain calm when you walk into the room. Your dog should have the patience to wait for you to get settled and signal that you are ready to play with him. Calmly enter the house and ignoring your dog until you are ready to interact with him.

Keep your dog active. Don’t let your dog sit around with nothing to do. They won’t get any exercise that way and if they’re too bored, they might sniff around and get into some trouble. When a dog is bored, he will be hard to train. Your dogs will obey more quickly if you keep them well exercised. A long walk or a brisk run are great ways to get rid of some of your dog’s excess energy.

Try not to reinforce bad behavior in your dog by accident. Don’t give praise or treats to your dog if it does something wrong. For instance, avoid rubbing the dog’s head every time they jump up when you get home.

When training, find a verbal clue your pet can understand so they will know exactly when to do as you say. If you do not have a treat you can reward your dog with, pet it and talk to it in a soft voice until you find a treat.

It is important to avoid dwelling on one task for too long. Spending too much time just on one aspect of training will bore your dog and waste your efforts. Only spend 10 minutes during the first couple of sessions.

Use short training sessions. Since dogs do not have a long attention span, short lessons will prevent them from getting bored. If you want to train more, make sure to include play breaks for your dog.

Avoid letting your dog have accidents when potty training. Learn to know the things your pet does when it needs to go. Pacing and whining are common signs. Don’t put it off when your dog is doing these things. Get his leash so you can take him to the designated potty area. Give him praise for proper toilet behavior. In time, the dog will ask when he wants to go outside.

Acclimate your dog to the source that triggers his barking fits. It might be something they hear or being exposed to people. Your goal is to show your pet that barking is not an appropriate response to these common stimuli.

These suggestions will help you train your dog. Remember these tips as a guide to helping you train your dog, so both you and your dog will be very happy.
