Helpful tips you can use while training your dog

September 2, 2013 By

Many people believe that training their dog themselves is much too difficult. This is probably because they don’t know how to properly train their dogs. In order to train a dog, you must be knowledgeable about different training techniques that exist. Keep reading to learn all you can about training tips.

Have a good reward system when training your dog. Giving you pet treats in a timely manner is very important. This is because dogs tend not to understand what it’s being rewarded for when they do not get it at the proper time.

When your dog behaves well in a training session, reward him in a calm manner. If your dog follows a training command properly, then it is acceptable to reward the behavior to a calm animal. Don’t let your own excitement get your dog excited or they will lose focus. Maintain a calm atmosphere and provide an appropriate reward.

Be sure to keep your dog active and engaged a great deal of the time. When dogs have nothing to do, they can get bored. A bored dog will try and find something interesting to do, and training is not usually interesting. When your dog is exercised and is happy, training will be easier. Go on runs or long walks together.

A dog will obsess about one thing until you divert its attention. After you repeat these cues enough, your dog will learn to focus on you, primarily, as he or she waits for signals.

Repetition is the key to success when teaching a dog a new command. It’s very common to repeat a command up to 50 times before your dog can learn it. Keep trying the same commands until your dog remembers it for good.

You can train a pooch to roll over fairly quickly if you have some treats to hand out. Begin by getting the dog to lay down. Then, put a treat close to the floor near the side of the dog’s head, and gradually raise it over its head to the opposite side. He should roll his body over while following the treat. Say “roll over” as he performs the action so that he’ll learn the command. Never become frustrated if it does not happen right away. Once he does learn how, he will be a celebrity among other dogs.

Come up with a phrase that you can teach your puppy during house training. Every time you take him outside, tell him “go potty,” (use whatever phrase you have chosen) and this will help him learn to focus and remember what he has gone outside to do.

You must be firm with your dog in order to train it effectively. Try not to yell though, as negative reinforcement does not work. This consistent interaction will lend toward a good relationship between you are your dog.

Continue training your dog throughout its life to make sure that its good behavior persists. The dog does not stop learning as it grows older. When you work with your dog consistently to produce the best behaviors, you help your dog to remain healthy and happy. Discipline will keep him in line.

You need to be very consistent when training your dog. If you have a large family ensure everyone is involved with the dog training. It will be easier for a pet to learn a single set of commands.

Hopefully with this knowledge, you will be more confident in training your dog. Be sure to use the advice from this article, plus knowledge that you gain from other sources, to ensure that you have the best plan for training your dog.
