Training your dog can be fun for you and him

August 29, 2013 By

Although you may care for your things, your dog may not feel the same way. Your dog has no regard for material possessions, and yearns to chew on them. This article will provide proven tips and tricks that have been known to help eliminate unwanted dog chewing.

Always reward good, calm behavior. Reward them only when your dog is calm after it performs a trick. While you might be pleased, acting too excited may cause the dog to get agitated, lessening your control. Remain calm, expect them to be calm, and then award them when appropriate.

Continue training your dog so he doesn’t forget how to learn. Pet owners often believe that once their dog completes a training program, the process is over. However, pets are ruled by habits, structure and routine in much that same way that humans are. Therefore it is very important to maintain a good set of rules for your dog.

“Leave it” is a command that should be taught and reinforced early on. You can protect their safety and stop them from destroying valuables by teaching them to obey this simple command.

If you are going to be doing any training you need to know how to enforce the rules. This utilizes something the dog loves as a means to reward positive behaviors. Primary reinforcements include using food as treats and rubbing your dog’s belly. By doing this method of training, your dog will learn that in order to get what they want, they must do what you want.

Use positive reinforcement when dog training. Use petting, positive words, and occasion treats to reward your dog whenever he does something good. Do not ever scream at or strike your dog. This makes the dog think you are imbalanced. Stay positive but stand your ground when training your dog.

When you toilet train your dog, avoid accidents! Learn the signs that your dog needs to use the restroom. Constant whining, sniffing, and pacing around the house are all very common signs. The moment your pet begins to do any of these things, don’t waste a single moment. Get his leash and take him out to his designated toilet spot! Praise them for going to the bathroom properly. He will soon learn how to ask for the bathroom.

In order for your training to be effective, you have to understand that you’ll need to be firm. Try not to yell though, as negative reinforcement does not work. Maintaining a proper balance ensures that the relationship between you and your dog is strong.

Teach your dog a silent command to avoid barking. When he barks, show him his favorite treat, and repeat the command. “Quiet” works well. Only give them the treat when they obey the command. By repeating this, the dog learns that silence brings treats.

Give your dog new challenges often. Test the dog occasionally to check his memory, even though both of you know that he remembers his commands.

Be consistent when dog training. Keep a list of commands to use, and make sure everyone who might need to command the dog knows them. Also, make sure everyone knows what behavior should be rewarded, and what is considered bad behavior. If everyone is on the same page, the dog will better understand what is expected of him.

Every dog owner wants to help their pet become a well-adjusted member of the family and eliminate unsavory behavior like chewing and scratching on the furniture. This saves money, frustration, and perhaps even your dog’s life. These tips will be able to stop improper chewing.
