Getting the most out of your dog training efforts

August 23, 2013 By

People choose to bring a pet into their family for many reasons. A lovable pup may have caught your eye and you just couldn’t say no. No matter what your reasoning for getting a dog, having a well trained one will be ideal. In order to have an obedient dog, it will take some training. This article will provide some helpful ideas for doing just that!

Always remain consistent when crate training any young pups. When he comes out of the crate, you must immediately allow him to relieve himself in an appropriate place. Eventually, your dog will wait until you let him out of his crate to relive himself.

Repetition is the key to success when teaching a dog a new command. It’s very likely to take many repetitions of one command in order for your pup to fully understand it. Be patient and continue using a command until your dog learns it.

Be certain your dog knows that you are the leader of your pack. Your dog must understand that you’re in control, so that he knows to obey and respect you. When you walk with your dog, be sure to keep him at heel since you are the leader.

Have a treat ready to reward your dog after it properly completes a task you ask it to do. It is important that your dog is able to establish a connection between the command and the action that gains a reward. Rewarding good behavior and not bad behavior will help your dog to learn the difference between the two.

One of the first commands you need to teach your dog is how to step away from things you do not want him to touch. “Leave it” can prevent furniture chewing, save valuable objects from being destroyed and save your dog from consuming dangerous and/or poisonous substances.

Your dog needs to learn what the word “no” means. The most effective means of training a dog involves mostly positive reinforcements. The word ‘no’ itself is not enough to make your dog understand they need to stop what they are doing. Make sure that your training regimen is unique to your specific dog.

Try to find the triggers of your dogs barking to reduce this action. Some dogs bark in response to a specific sound, whereas others become excited in the presence of other people or dogs. The dog must learn that they do not need to start barking when these things occur.

Don’t bog your puppy down with more information than he can process. Puppies have short attention spans and don’t focus well, so make sure to keep your training sessions short, but as positive as you can. If you push too hard, your puppy will remember it as a negative experience, and the next time you work to train him, it will be far more difficult.

Time to put your new knowledge to the test. With any luck, the tips in this piece have provided you with great ideas for dog training. An obedient, well-trained dog is ideal. It’s a rewarding experience, but it’s also one that requires patience. Years into your relationship, you will be glad you made the effort. Always be on the lookout for opportunities to put these great tips into action.
