Simple ways to help train your dog

August 18, 2013 By

It is tough to figure out positive methods for training your dog, because he is a family member after all. The following article will shed some light on some simple dog training tricks and tips that you can use to your benefit. Education creates success, so educating yourself about how you should train your dog is an important first step.

Whenever you’re rewarding your dog for good behavior, make sure you stay calm and in control. Giving a reward for an appropriate behavior is correct, but do it quickly and move on. You might be thrilled with that accomplishment, when you are excited, they becomes excited and that cuts down the control in the situation. Be calm, expect calm, then reward appropriately.

Dogs generally focus on one thing while ignoring everything around them, unless something interrupts that intense focus. If you do it enough times, your dog will wait for your signals instead of focusing on other things.

When crate training a young puppy you must be consistent. If you remove the pup from the crate, see to it that he has the means to go potty. Doing so helps him learn when it is okay to go to the bathroom.

If you intend to use a crate in dog training, make sure the crate is an appropriate size for your dog. Don’t forget, your puppy will grow. Choose a crate that is sure to be the right proportions for the adult dog you will eventually have. There should be ample room for the dog to lie down and turn comfortably.

It is a simple task to teach a dog how to roll over, just be sure to keep some dog treats handy! Initially, try to get your dog to lay on the floor. Hold a treat between your forefingers near the left side of your dog’s head, and then slowly pass the treat in front of his face and to the opposite side. Your dog is probably going to follow the treat in your hand with his nose, which means he will rollover his whole body. Say “roll over” as he performs the action so that he’ll learn the command. It will take some work, but keep on trying!

Pick a phrase you will say to your new puppy the whole time you are working on house training him. Each time you let your dog out to relieve himself, use a phrase such as “go potty” so that he associates going outside with going to the bathroom.

For a dog to become house trained you should always have them on the same feeding schedule everyday, so their elimination time is always the same. This allows you to know when your dog has to go and take him outside to do his business before your carpet gets ruined. Then he will become practiced at waiting until the right time.

Always be patient when you train your dog. This will reduce anger, stress and tension when you train your dog. Keep in mind that they wish to please you; however, they get confused because they can’t understand your language.

You are now taking the first step to become a successful dog trainer. Use these tips and you can be not only train your dogs better, but you will better be able to understand them. The simplest ideas are the ones that can prove the most effective.
